Transportation Choices Sunshine Coast (TraC) is reminding motorists, cyclists, and area residents to expect increased bicycle traffic throughout upper Gibsons and the Elphinstone area on Sunday, July 27 between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. as the third annual Sunshine Coast Slow Food Cycle rolls through the community.
The event is expected to draw more than 500 cyclists on a self-guided tour of local farms, producers and artisan stops. While there are no road closures, professional traffic control and signage will be in place to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all road users.
Temporary traffic measures include:
• Professional flaggers at Highland Road and Stewart Road intersections on Highway 101 to assist cyclists crossing the highway safely.
• “Event in Progress” signage at 101 & Henry Road and Reed & Payne Road intersections to alert drivers of increased bike traffic.
• All riders are required to follow the rules of the road.
“We’re excited to see the community come together again for this celebration of local food and active living,” says Heather Anderson, TraC director and event organizer. “Our traffic management plan is focused on safety — for cyclists, pedestrians, and drivers alike.”
Motorists are asked to use extra caution when traveling through the area during event hours and to be patient and courteous when passing cyclists. Cyclists are reminded to ride single file, obey all traffic signs, and dismount when crossing highways with flagger assistance.
The Sunshine Coast Slow Food Cycle is a one-day, family-friendly event inviting residents and visitors to tour local food and drink producers by bicycle. The event supports local food production and sustainability by encouraging people to connect with where their food comes from and how it’s made. Riders set their own pace, choosing from over 15 stops including farms, cideries, artisans, and more.
Event sponsors include our founding sponsor, Sunshine Coast Credit Union, along with Shoreline Law, Anytime Fitness, FYI Doctors, ICBC, Greenline Ferries, Elphi Cycles, Persephone Brewery, Kenmac Auto Parts, Krista Wollen of Re/Max, Up the Creek Backpacker’s Lodge, and Gibsons Building Supplies.
The event is organized by Transportation Choices Sunshine Coast (TraC), a local nonprofit working to support healthy communities and reduce the Sunshine Coast’s carbon footprint by promoting more active and sustainable transportation alternatives to private vehicles, including cycling, walking and transit.
