Gumboot Nation: Six roaming siblings –– All about Coast Car Co-op

Hi! You’ve probably seen me napping beside the library in the Creek, or bouncing around town carrying branches and leaves to the green waste, heading to the dump or carrying boxes from the city or dirt from the nursery.

Hi! You’ve probably seen me napping beside the library in the Creek, or bouncing around town carrying branches and leaves to the green waste, heading to the dump or carrying boxes from the city or dirt from the nursery. And you’ve likely wondered about my logo and why I have so many different folks driving me.

I’m your friendly neighbourhood Coast Car Co-op truck! I go by the name of Black Ranger.

I’m an old timer, for sure. 2010 vintage to be exact. I’m so old I’ve got roll up windows! So ancient you have to actually turn off and on my headlights! I’m not kidding. No Bluetooth, no backup camera, none of that fancy stuff. Just a plain old black truck with a broom in the back. But despite my age, I’m still pretty popular.

Now maybe you’ve forgotten, or you’re new to these parts, so I’ll tell you a little bit about me.

I belong to the Coast Car Co-op  https://www.coastcarco-op.ca/, a nice little car co-op located here on the Sunshine Coast. I’ve got five siblings, right now: Orange Prius lives at the ferry, and Silver Prius is at the mall in Sechelt. My twin, White Ranger, is at the mall in Gibsons along with sister Vibe. Last but not least is Charcoal Prius, and he is down in Lower Gibsons. We all move around once in a while so everyone gets a chance to use us.

Speaking of which, here’s how it works.

You go to the website and fill out an application form coastcarco-op.ca/how-to-join.html. Once that gets processed you send in a refundable membership fee and BAM you’re the proud co-op owner of me and all my siblings!

To book us, you just go online — or onto our handy dandy mobile app — and figure out what day and time you want to use us and click “BOOK IT” and you’re done. As low as $5 and hour, plus .35/km. Gas and insurance are covered. Pretty sweet deal! Oh, and I will mention that a membership in Coast Car Co-op makes it easy to get a roaming membership at MODO car co-op in Vancouver.

The folks that volunteer to keep the co-op running are working hard, collaborating with developers and the Town of Gibsons to put co-op cars in dedicated parking areas. Coast Car Co-op also works with businesses; you see, it’s easier for some workplaces on the coast to use me and my sibs for “company cars” for their staff to use, rather than pay out mileage and stuff. There’s also lots of folks that live in Vancouver that travel to the coast for work who book cars so they can get around to all the stuff they have to look after.

So, if you’re interested in me or the other vehicles, pop over to the website and have a look! Any questions, just email [email protected] and one of the humans will get back to you. If you’re interested in volunteering, the board is looking for two other members to help expand the co-op and obtain more vehicles. Hope to see you around!
