Food security is a global conversation affecting all seven billion inhabitants. Where does our food come from? How can we increase food security? What are the opportunities to growing a local food economy?
The Rotary Club of Sechelt is holding an open event on June 26 to discuss these questions and lay the groundwork for a food policy council on the Coast.
These questions can be heard in many communities on any given day, and we hear it loud and clear in our community. Over the past year, the Rotary Club of Sechelt has participated in many conversations about local food. At one of its recent meetings, the club invited community members to hear the incoming international president for Rotary, Ravi Ravidran, share his thoughts on doing good.
A discussion followed on the good being done in our community to further our local food security. The Rotary Club of Sechelt has committed funding to assist in sponsoring an event that will be moving discussions of a food policy council into action.
June 26 will be a day dedicated to bringing those questions and activities into focus with an objective to establish a food policy council on the Sunshine Coast. It will feature Marty Frost, president of the British Columbia Cooperative Association, who will present information on the benefits of a cooperative model for a food policy council.
A local food lunch will be featured with Laila Benkrima, an expert in local food capacity building, that will be followed by a workshop on local food matters. There is a high level of interest in food security, as pointed out by the recent Vital Signs Report, which was produced by the Sunshine Coast Community Foundation.
Seating for this event is limited, so please sign up early. If your business or organization would like to assist in sponsoring the event, please email [email protected]. For more information, see www.secheltrotary.ca and follow the local food links.
