Nearly 200 members of the Sunshine Coast community experienced an engaging event on Sunday, Aug. 27 at Rockwood Centre Pavilion – another MedTalks hosted by Sechelt Hospital Foundation. Created as an informative speaker series focused on mental, physical and emotional well-being, and addressing community health interests and population needs, the second MedTalks focused on Aging Well.
Featured presenters included Torah Kachur, University of Alberta, Edmonton, professor and CBC science columnist, sharing her scientific insights on Ageless: Insights on Curing the Aging Process; Louise Rolland from University of Victoria, who encouraged registration in local Self-Management and health coaching workshops this fall; and physiotherapist Jody Shaw, who shared a few moves we can all make to stay healthy across the decades.
Local songbirds Reg and Lynne Dickson and Warren Allen performed before, during and after each session, even getting the audience to stand and “twist the night away” en masse. Resources and local support services were available before and after the presentations as represented by SCRD Recreation (Reagan Lovig), SunCoast Fit (Sandra Buchanan), CRN (April Struthers), SC Credit Union (Linda Cordell), Elizabeth Innes, Choir for the Terrified (Lynne Dickson), Happy Hearts and Telephonic Care (Brenda Rowe), Alzheimer’s Support Group (Shari Myhill-Jones), and Opioid Dialogues (Rhonda Jackman) who helped create a welcoming atmosphere with bright displays of local resources for our community.
The next MedTalks, Below the Belt, with Dr. Larry Goldenberg, international prostate cancer clinical scientist, will be held on Nov. 3, at Chatelech Secondary School from 7 to 9 p.m. See www.sechelthospitalfoundation.org/med-talks for details.
