Love to Sail…but? Gibsons Yacht Club has boats for that

Gibsons Yacht Club says, “No boat? No problem.

Gibsons Yacht Club is hosting a Club Boat info day May 7.

Gibsons Yacht Club says, “No boat? No problem.” The club has increased its Club Boat fleet to three sailboats and is looking for new members who want to sail — but don’t have the money, time or commitment necessary to own their own boats.

The Club Boat program has continued to grow since its inception in 2016, meeting a need in the community for a less expensive way to spend time on the water. For less than $800, GYC Club Boat members get access to any of the three sailboats — each of which can easily accommodate up to four people — for a full year, and pay no maintenance, insurance, or docking charges. In addition, members enjoy the perks of the yacht club’s experienced members and social activities year-round.

“Experienced boaters are always willing to help,” said vice commodore Jim Forward, who has been sailing since he was 10. “Each member gets seven consecutive days’ use of the boats per year, and daily or overnight use as available. There is no limit on when you can go out unless the boats have already been booked.”

Members can go day sailing around Keats or across to Bowen Island for lunch. Some venture further to explore the Gulf Islands or up to Desolation Sound. GYC members can also crew in winter racing events in the harbour and receive special rates for topping up their boating safety and navigation skills with Power Squadron courses. No matter what the occasion, the opportunity to spend time on the water and in fellowship with like-minded souls at club activities is priceless.

It’s not just a summer thing. The boats are available for use year-round and GYC’s active social calendar brings members together off the water as well.

“Club Boat members bring a healthy growth to the yacht club,” said commodore Kate McQuaid. “In fact, several former Club Boat members are now GYC boating members with their own boats, thanks to gaining confidence and having positive experiences with our fleet of sailboats.”

A Club Boat info day will take place Saturday, May 7, at the Gibsons Marina. Visitors can tour the boats, talk to members about the Club, or visit the nautical swap meet at the marina docks from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
