Let’s be neighbourly!

Living Well
neighbours
Set an extra place at your table for a new neighbour.

Can a strong sense of community contribute to your personal well-being? Absolutely! Building a supportive community benefits each of us individually as well as collectively by providing a sense of belonging, safety and security and the freedom to exist peacefully among folks with differing interests, needs, goals and backgrounds.

As citizens in a democracy we have a privileged opportunity to contribute within our community to the best of our ability. Even with minimal effort, the benefits of singular and collective positive action can be far-reaching and long-lasting, making for a much better place to live and prosper.

Curious about what you can do personally? Here are several ways you can make a real difference and build community, while learning about your fellow citizens and sharing your unique ideas.

Be a good neighbour. Watch out for others in your local area and take care and pride in the surroundings. Say hello to a stranger, check in on elderly or infirm folks who might appreciate a few groceries, supper at your table or a friendly conversation – and keep an eye on each other’s property and possessions. Simply saying “good morning” can brighten someone’s day and set a positive mood and vibe that has a ripple effect among community members.

Consider being of service by getting involved in your town’s issues and initiatives (rather than complaining or lamenting over local politics). You’ll likely witness a shift in your own attitude and understanding by contributing thought, time and expertise. Attend council meetings and info sessions for local developments that impact your neighbourhood, and let your voice be heard respectfully. Local advisory groups are also often looking for committee members to lend their expertise. You can make a real difference by contributing.

Volunteering time is extremely valuable and rewarding. Our local food banks, community gardens, art groups, children’s groups, sports teams and community events benefit by your support. Feeling extra keen? Consider learning the skills required to become a volunteer firefighter, search and rescue team member or a support volunteer for specialized community services. On the Sunshine Coast, contact the Volunteer Centre for a wide variety of opportunities at scvolunteer.com

As communities grow and attract new residents, people of many cultures and socio-economic backgrounds have the opportunity to live and learn from each other. Nurturing an inclusive spirit by being open and encouraging is a healthy way to celebrate diversity and build a great community. So why not invite the shy newbie at the gym or your workplace out for coffee or tea and get to know them better?

At the heart of a strong community is a sincere spirit of tolerance, support and unity. By working together and individually, we can all be more neighbourly, contributing to one of the most significant foundations of our overall health, happiness and well-being.
