It is with deep regret that we have to announce the postponement of our planned Gibsons Landing Marina Cleanup, originally scheduled for June 11.
Ten members of "Divers for Cleaner Lakes and Oceans" had planned to volunteer their time and diving expertise to clean the harbour.
Unfortunately, we could not secure a location in Gibsons to sort the garbage after it came out of the marina. The cost of removing the garbage was another obstacle.
For the past decade "Divers for Cleaner Lakes and Oceans,” a group of professional divers who volunteer their time, has been involved in lake and ocean cleanups in numerous areas across B.C., including Hotel Lake in Pender Harbour earlier this year. The Gibsons Landing Marina Cleanup is the first that we have had to postpone.
In several communities, local artists and arts councils have joined cleanup efforts by turning some of the waste pieces removed from waters into art. "Diving In": The Art of Cleaning Lakes and Oceans,” is an environmental art campaign that has received acclaim in the Sea to Sky area, West Vancouver and North Vancouver. Bringing the campaign to the Sunshine Coast would be a natural extension, following the waters of the Salish Sea. However, that won’t happen this year.
Thank you for supporting our efforts. We hope for a better result next time.
