KidSport Sunshine Coast raised $2,900 at its annual Turkey Shoot on Saturday, Dec. 8. The community packed Blackfish Pub where 30 turkeys were raffled and many other raffle prizes drawn.

“This is a great night with our community,” said KidSport director Tom Hierck. “We have fun, raise money for the kids, and let the community know how important their donations are.”

Each year this event is made possible because of the support of SuperValu, MarketPlace IGA in Gibsons, Wilson Creek and Madeira Park, Your Independent Grocer and Claytons Heritage Market – all grocers donate turkeys for the raffle. The host, Blackfish Pub, also donates a raffle prize along with The Gibsons Butcher and this year, Vancouver Giants.

The 2018 Turkey Shoot was part of the celebration of the KidSport chapter’s 10th anniversary on the Sunshine Coast. Attending the Saturday event was Community Champion Muriel Daly, who was also celebrating her 90th birthday. Muriel established a KidSport Youth Sports Endowment through Sunshine Coast Community Foundation Society several years ago and invites the community to participate in it so that sports for kids will be possible now and in future years.

Co-chairs Carol Duff and Diane Wagner initiated this chapter of KidSport in 2018 with Jim Gray and Tom Hierck joining them as directors. Shortly after Brent Rottluff, Chrissy Bader and Kelsey Dunn joined the KidSport Team. Together, with the community’s support and the KidSport Community Champion sponsorships, over 1,100 kids have received sport grants.
