Get ready to bid! The Sunshine Coast Hospice’s inaugural online Community Auction kicks off at midnight, July 18 and runs until July 26.

Enthusiastic members of the Hospice Board and staff have collected auction items worth over $30,000 from local businesses, artisans and talented individuals. The more than 100 auction items include works by local artists, a variety of classes and lessons, tools, outdoor activities, private dinners, vacation getaways, home improvement services, and more.

The online auction is in support of Hike for Hospice, the society’s main annual fundraiser, which is also running online this year and scheduled to end July 26.

Both of these projects are the result of creative brainstorming over the past several months by members of the Hospice board of directors and a small trio of staff via Zoom video calls focused on how to mitigate the impacts of COVID-19 on Hospice programs and services.

“We are so grateful to receive these donations during the COVID-19 recession,” said executive director Elana Robinson. “We really feel the sense of community that we’re all in this together. We’re also happy to be able to help promote the amazing talent and businesses in our local community in these challenging times through the auction.”

One donor to this year’s auction is Sylvie Bruce, owner of Shades of Jade Inn & Spa, whose gift of massage services will be awarded to the highest bidder.

“We support Hospice because they are an amazing group of silent heroes helping families through very difficult times,” Bruce said. “We are so grateful for the time they spent with one of our family members during her last few days. Knowing someone was there so we could go home and sleep for a few hours was priceless. We are thankful to all of these incredible volunteers!”

Preview the auction items now, and get ready to place your bids when the online auction opens on Saturday, July 18 at www.coasthospice.com/auction. For questions or private viewings of auction items, please contact Hospice philanthropy manager Katie Clogg at [email protected] or 604-740-0475.

The Sunshine Coast Hospice Society provides compassionate support and companionship to people in the end stages of life and those experiencing bereavement to more than 150 people each year. More than 70 volunteers and a small paid staff provide hospice services, which include maintaining two suites located in Shorncliffe Long-term Care Home.
