Halfmoon Bay

Hi everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful week. The weather cooperated for the most part and I’m sure some folks have already started organizing their gardens. Some say that’s it’s a bit early to do the fall/winter cleanup as there are insects such as bees, butterflies and other pollinators overwintering under leaves and hollowed out stems of last year’s plants. It is suggested to wait until temperatures are consistently above 10 C or 50 F.

Here on the Coast, spring break is March 15 through to March 26. COVID protocols are still in place, so the usual travelling during this time may not be possible but students and teachers are enjoying some time away from school. Families are planning outdoor play dates with friends, backyard bonfires and small gatherings while others are choosing to relax and stay close to home. Whatever you do during these two weeks, take some time to breathe some fresh air, go for a hike, or just sit on a log beside the ocean. Enjoy the beauty that we are blessed with here on the Sunshine Coast.

The Halfmoon Bay Community School is very excited to receive their new Orbis obstacle course in the next few days and are asking volunteers to help set up. Organizers have scheduled March 29 and 30 for project construction and ask volunteers to be available for both days. The project will be supervised by playground installation professionals Green Roots Play Equipment Inc. who have been in the playground industry for over 20 years. If you are interested, please contact Wendy White, HMB School co-ordinator, at [email protected]. Wendy will forward a waiver form, which is required for helping with this project. Volunteers are asked to bring gardening tools such as shovels, rakes, wheelbarrows, and digging bars and wear gloves. COVID safety protocols will be in place and please bring your mask. Refreshments and lunch will be provided. Students and staff are looking forward to this amazing project and are very grateful to all those that can help.

The Sargeant Bay Society will be doing some maintenance in the marsh access trails on the berm in Sargeant Bay. SBS president Rand Rudland said, “before we get to the bird nesting season, it’s a good time to clean up the area.” The date is set for Wednesday, March 24 with March 25 as the back-up date should the weather not cooperate. Maintenance will begin at 9 a.m. and should be done by noon. Volunteers are asked to bring clippers, rakes and pitch forks and be sure to wear gloves. Contact Rand at [email protected] to volunteer and he will send out a notification if the date needs to be rescheduled. Thank you to all for maintaining this beautiful park and surrounding marshland.

Be safe, be gentle, and always be kind.
