Pender Harbour Days are here again, three days of fun for all the family at Millennium Park, Madeira Park Government Wharf.
This Friday, the classic and modern boats assemble at 5 p.m. for the opening boat parade featuring the Pender Harbour Pipe and Drum Band. Prizes will be awarded to the best dressed crew and boat in Canada 150 red and white regalia. Enjoy fine local talent at the School of Music Coffee House starting at 8 p.m., with popular performers Mark Breezer, singer guitarist; Shelley and Allan Neinhuis, vocal duet and solos with Ken Johnson on piano; Joan and Ted, singer songwriters; and Mikayla Kozlof, vocals, piano and ukulele accompaniment. Coffee, tea and delicious sweets are available. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Music at 8 p.m.
Saturday has it all for everyone: mini boat building, kids’ face painting, petting zoo, oyster shucking and log sawing completions, heritage displays, music, vendors, and hard hat divers filming the ocean floor.
In the evening, time for great live music with The Relics at the Legion. Doors open at 7 p.m. $10 for members, $12:50 for guests. Snack menu is available.
Sunday is the day when Buttercup, the 18-foot sailing dory of Allen Farrell (originally named Peace and Quiet) returns to the Harbour arriving at the Madeira Park government dock approximately at noon sporting her distinctive junk-rigged sail and escorted by the Garden Bay Sailing Club. Her future is with the Pender Harbour Living Heritage Society. Shendra Hanney will be aboard for the hand-off ceremony. Take in the popular heritage talk, stories from locals and experts about the Harbour’s marine history. This year learn about the commercial fishing boats’ flags and see the amazing collection of flags donated to the PH Living Heritage Society. The old-fashioned family, community picnic with musical HUGS will complete a very special three days all about a very special place, Pender Harbour.
Pender Harbour Seniors Initiative activities this week: Tuesday walking 10:30 to 11 a.m.; woodfire pizza 11:30 a.m. at Kathy and Wayne Bergman’s $10; reserve with Marlene 604-883-9900. Wednesday carpet bowling 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday at 10:30 a.m. Harbourside Friendship welcomes the beautiful, immensely talented international performer Lori Carmichael. Enjoy her amazing voice and music. Lunch served at noon. Friday 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., take a seat for chair yoga. All activities at the Pender Harbour Hall.
