After a well-deserved holiday, the Bargain Barn thrift store is open again for business. Hours are Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Thursday from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. The money made by the store goes to the Pender Harbour Health Centre and bursaries for our Pender Harbour graduates. The contributions made by you and the volunteers who work there make a huge positive impact on more lives than you may realize.
Pender Harbour Music Society presents Dawn Pemberton, Canada’s new queen of soul, Sunday, Jan. 15, at 2 p.m. In 2015 she was part of the talented band with the unique name The Harpoonist and the Axe Murderer that won the Western Canadian Music Awards in three categories for their release A Real Fine Mess. Thanks to her strong vocal technique and true emotional connection, Pemberton’s voice is a perfect fit for the complementary worlds of R & B, gospel, funk and jazz fusion. The Pender Harbour Community School is pleased to announce the Harbour Learning Centre will now be open four days a week, Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Open Door Group now offers outreach employment services from the Harbour Learning Centre on the third Thursday of each month from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Drop by anytime to check out the job board, or set up an appointment by calling 604-885-3351.
Seniors Initiative has a new activity. Come learn the art of origami Monday mornings at 9:30 a.m. at Mad Park Bistro from enthusiast Sam Campbell. Folks will be invited to teach others to achieve the goal of 1,000 cranes by August this year to be displayed representing peace and prosperity. Tuesday come walking 10:30 to 11 a.m. Wednesday roll on down to carpet bowling, 1 to 3 p.m. This Thursday, Jan. 19, join in Exploring Puzzles at Harbourside Friendship starting at 10:30 a.m. Lunch is served at noon. Friday chair yoga is 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. All activities Tuesday through Friday are at PH Community Hall.
An intergenerational activity with high school students will be held Monday, Jan. 16 with the topic Documenting Stories, 11:28 to 12:28 p.m. at the secondary school.
Robbie Burns Night is Friday, Jan. 20 and will feature the traditional dinner fare with entertainment by the Coast Fiddlers and the combined Pender Harbour and Gibsons Pipe Bands. Tickets for $35 are available at the Legion and Harbour Insurance.
FLAIR in Pender will be held on Saturday, Jan. 21 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Activity Centre in Lily Lake Village, 12710 Lagoon Road. The guest speaker, Barbara McAllister, is a registered nurse, reiki master/teacher, reflexology, sound healing. She will talk on energy medicine. Barbara uses learned healing techniques from sound with the aid of tuning forks and Tibetan bowls, integrating the two worlds of eastern and western medicine.
