Huge heartfelt thanks to all who supported our very successful BCSPCA Paws for a Cause fundraiser last Friday at the EarthFair Store. Now, are you ready for the biggest dog walk ever? Come celebrate with us this Sunday, Sept. 13 at Cliff Gilker Park for the annual Paws for a Cause Walk. Donations can be made and more information found at spca.bc.ca/walk.

Here is the schedule of activities brought to you by the Seniors Initiative Group for this week: Tuesday, Sept. 15 the morning walk starting off from the Hall (meet at 10:30 a.m.); Wednesday, Sept. 16 indoor sports are on the roster – carpet bowling at the PH Community Hall (cost $3); and Thursday, Sept. 17 Harbourside Friendships is taking a day trip to Sea to Sky Gondola. The Pender Harbour Wildlife Society will hold its first meeting of the fall on Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. at Pender Harbour Secondary School. The guest speaker for the evening will be LeeAnn Ennis, naturalist with the Iris Griffith Centre. Ennis will discuss the concept of PODS – Pender Ocean Discovery Station – and present preliminary sketches. Dr. Michael Jackson, the Ruby Lake Lagoon Society, and various other supporters hope to have this project, in the heart of Madeira Park, up and running by 2020. Everyone is welcome; there is no charge. The Society will have a short meeting and refreshments following the presentation.

The Pender Harbour Jazz Festival is upon us next weekend. The Harbour Gallery will be open Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. also including the evening shows held at the School of Music. Contact June at 604-883-2807 or Nefri at 604-885-4366.

The Pender Harbour Advisory Council Society (PHAC) will focus on recreation and the environment at its Town Hall Meeting and AGM on Sept. 13 at 1 p.m. at the Community Hall in Madeira Park. The meeting will feature presentations on the scourge of Japanese knotweed and what is being done about it; illegal garbage dumping; the Trails Signage Project; the Community Garden Project at the Health Centre; and the Pender Harbour Ocean Discovery Station Project. Time has been allotted for the community to talk openly about current and future community priorities. As part of the Pender Harbour Advisory Council’s AGM, there will be an update on the council’s work on the draft Pender Harbour Dock Management Plan as well as the election of new members of the council’s board.

Girl Guiding in Pender Harbour is getting ready for another awesome year. Sparks (girls in Kindergarten and Grade 1) and Pathfinders (girls in Grades 7, 8 and 9) begin on Monday, Sept. 14. Brownies (girls in Grades 2 and 3) will be starting soon.
