The last chance to bid at the silent auction of Richard Robinson's painting Whiskey Slough at the Harbour Gallery is May Day, Saturday May 16.  The membership will be exhibiting their new paintings for the summer at the gallery across from the School of Music, Madeira Park. The Pender Harbour Reading Centre is experimenting with extended opening hours this summer. Starting on Saturday, May 16 the Reading Centre will be open five days per week (Tuesday through Saturday) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This pilot project is in response to comments in the user survey conducted last year. The new service hours will be in effect until Sept. 7 (Labour Day). If the change is popular and better meet the needs of the community, opening hours may be changed permanently.

Drop-in sports at PHSS gym are Mondays 7 to 9 p.m. for $3. Enjoy a variety of sports: basketball, volleyball, badminton and more!

The PH Community School is pleased to offer kids basketball on Mondays 2:45 to 4 p.m. for ages five to 12, and kids baseball for ages four to nine on Tuesdays 2:45 to 4 p.m. at Madeira Park Elementary School. Cost is $40.

The Pender Harbour Wildlife Society will hold its last meeting until September on Tuesday, May 19, at Pender Harbour Senior Secondary School, at 7 p.m. Guest speaker is Eliza Olson, founding president and volunteer executive director of the Burns Bog Conservation Society, who has received many awards and international recognition for her talks on Burns Bog.  Everyone is welcome. There is no charge, and refreshments will be served. The Society will hold its annual picnic in June.  Details to be announced at a later date.

The Pender Harbour Advisory Committee regrets that the Town Hall Meeting set for May 20 in the Community Hall in Madeira Park has been cancelled because Chief Calvin Craigan is unable to attend.

Local author Ray Phillips writes about the history of Jervis Inlet in his new book, The Royal Fjord: Memories of Jervis Inlet.  The EarthFair Store will be sponsoring Phillips’ Pender Harbour book launch at the School of Music in Madeira Park, on Wednesday, May 20 from 4 to 6 p.m. Admission is free and everyone is welcome. The event will feature a reading by the author, refreshments and a book signing. For more information, contact EarthFair at 604-883-9006.

The PH Community School will offer a Red Cross first aid course on May 23 and 24 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Cost is $175. For more information, call 604-883-2826.

Prime rib dinner is back in a big way at the Legion Saturday May 30, when Chef Doug Davis will be creating a delicious three course dinner. Skinny Jimmy will be there cooking up the tunes. A limited number of tickets are on sale now at the Legion and Harbour Insurance; $18.95 for adults, $8.95 for children. For more information, call 604-883-2235. Pender Harbour Music Society’s Annual General Meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 10 at 3 p. m. at the PH School of Music.
