Harbour / Egmont Highlights: Ready, set, go: It’s April Tools!

Also, watch for bears remerging after winter’s hibernation
Pender Harbour

Are you ready? Tomorrow, Saturday April 30, is going to be a very exciting day in the Harbour. The 19th Annual April Tools Wooden Boat Challenge, an all-day event, is one of the Sunshine Coast’s most popular and entertaining! In the morning, teams are handed their secret, surprise materials to construct their boat. They begin working feverishly building what hopefully will be the winning craft in the afternoon’s races. Activities, displays and vendors add to the day’s enjoyment. Come cheer on your favourite team as they fiercely compete for the big cash prizes. All happens at Millennium Park and Government dock. Visit www.penderharbour heritage.ca for the complete schedule of events.

Just steps away, visit our beautiful Harbor Gallery that will open for the first time this year, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. This will be your last chance to purchase last year’s artwork at reduced prices. Before the long weekend in May, new creations will replace those from last year.

A short walk will take you to the Annual Spring Plant Sale, an “All for the Hall” fundraiser at the Pender Harbour Community Hall, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Once there you will find fantastic botanical treasures, gardening books and magazines, silent auction, and Sunshine Coast Bear Alliance information and merchandise. Renew or sign up for a Pender Harbour Community Club membership.

Saturday, the Celebration of life for Paul Gaudet will be held at the Legion 1 to 3 p.m.

It’s peak time for all forms of nature to show their presence. Steve Clifford, commercial beekeeper for more than 40 years and president of the Coast’s beekeepers club has asked to be contacted at 604-885-9664 if any swarms of honeybees are spotted. Swarms are doomed if not treated with organic substances for two types of parasitic mites. Untreated, the result could be globally catastrophic. Thank you, Steve, for a wonderful presentation at this week’s Women’s Connection.

Our resident bears have emerged from their dens. They are active and often on our roads, so be aware and slow down. Sunshine Coast Bear Alliance has an excellent Facebook site and is out in the Coast’s communities with presentations and information. They provide signage for your neighbourhood and roadways should you spot a bear. Thanks to Amber Silvey for her Facebook post of a mom and cubs crossing the busy Egmont road. I am on my way to get signage up to keep all safe. Simple actions are critical. Please secure all garbage and attractants around your home and establishment and be “bear aware” when hiking and biking Coast trails. Please go to scbearalliance.com to learn about living respectfully and safely with our bears.

Come Visit! Come shop! At Friday Madeira Market today and every Friday through September 24, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Courtyard at the Hall. Have something you create, bake, grow? Come join us. Space just $10 – proceeds go toward maintaining the Hall.
