Sometimes the frenzied aspect of the holidays is about as appealing as a slice of store-bought, discount Christmas cake. It can be too sweet, nondescript and ultimately unsatisfying. But pass around a tray of Grandma’s secret shortbread cookies, and suddenly you combine tradition with love and feel the true spirit of the season by sharing a gift that’s meaningful.
Lost your apron? No worries. The Coast is hosting dozens of craft shows and bake sales over the coming weeks. Plus, there is a selection of wonderful local artisan bake shops, including the scratch baking offered up at traditional grocery stores. Check out what’s on offer and stock up to serve guests or give as gifts.
Not in the mood for baking? There are local preserves, honey, traditional and raw/vegan sweets on offer. And don’t forget the local chocolate made fresh in small batches on the Sunshine Coast. We also have locally blended teas, fresh roasted coffee and artisan wholesome granolas and other wonderful cereals. It’s possible to make up entire gift baskets or check off your whole list with local, healthy and wholesome edible gifts.
A charming, inexpensive and easy way to share homemade baking as a gift is to layer the ingredients for a simple bar or cookie recipe in a clear Mason jar with lid. Layers of dry ingredients, brown sugar, chocolate chips, etc. look delicious, and your recipient can have fun making the treats whenever he or she chooses. Just add a ribbon and hand-lettered label to the jar, and you’re done.
Besides foodstuffs, it’s easy to find or make many other gifts that are locally sourced, environmentally sensitive and practical. Knitted mitts, scarves, sweaters and socks are always charming and there is still plenty of time to whip up some smaller items. Or visit a local wool, yarn or fabric store or hit the craft sales for some ready-made items made by local artisans.
Locally authored books? We’ve got stacks of those on the Coast too, from fiction to cookbooks, along with beautiful locally photographed calendars and greeting cards. And, of course, if you’re interested in giving the gift of art to friends and family, you can produce or frame a work of your own or select from works of hundreds of talented Sunshine Coast artists, jewellers, sculptors and artisans.
Handmade decorations are abundant also. Getting festive doesn’t have to be crass or complicated. Pick up a locally made wreath or table centrepiece at a nursery, florist or garden shop. Or simply go for a walk in the forest or park and pick up a few pinecones and wind fallen boughs of evergreens to bring home.
Adding local handmade accents to the holidays helps keep us in touch with the simple pleasures of the season while enjoying the gift of sharing and receiving.
