Hi everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful week. It’s that time of year again to set our clocks forward one hour. Daylight Saving Time officially begins at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 13, so it will be a little darker in the mornings, but the afternoons will be a bit brighter as we move closer to spring and summer.

Spring break runs from March 14 to 25, so be mindful of more pedestrians along the roadside and side streets as there may be more children playing outdoors, walking and biking. Looking for ideas to keep those young ones busy? Try some of these: have a living room picnic. Gather the kids together in the kitchen to prepare their favorite lunch, spread a blanket and throw some cushions on the living room floor and enjoy sitting together while eating the lunch they prepared. How about making paper airplanes? There are many designs to choose from online. Create them together then ramp up the fun by making a makeshift air strip. Have a contest to see which plane goes the farthest or which plane flew the best. Fort building can be super fun: take some time to set-up, get creative using items around the house and then have endless playtime inside the fort. There is also rock painting, which children of all ages can participate in along with their parents. It’s time to be creative and active and have fun!

There is a lovely new Book Nook at the 8700 block of Redrooffs Road. This beautiful little nook was built by local residents Peter B. and his son Jamie. This is so awesome and very much appreciated. Sign below the nook says, “Take a Book, Leave a Book. Redrooffs free little library.” How cute is that? Thank-you Peter and Jamie!

Our resident bears on the Sunshine Coast are beginning to emerge from their dens. Please be sure to secure all garbage and attractants around your home and property, this includes your vehicles. Always be “bear aware” when hiking and biking on the trails. Most bears are active in the early morning, evening and during the night. If out on the trails, travel in pairs or groups and always keep your dogs on a leash. A high percentage of unwanted bear encounters involve bears being chased by dogs or the other way around, bringing the bear back to the dog’s owners. To find more information, visit the Sunshine Coast Bear Alliance website at scbearalliance.com and learn about living respectfully and safely with our bears.

The Halfmoon Bay Branch of the Sunshine Coast Healthcare Auxiliary will be meeting on Monday, March 14 at Coopers Green Hall. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. with the meeting beginning at 10 a.m. Members and guests are welcome. Must have proof of vaccination and wearing a mask is mandatory.

The Halfmoon Bay Community Association’s (HBCA) “Auction at the Bay” online fundraiser runs from March 12 to March 27. Items will be added daily. At the time of writing this column, the link to the secure auction site has not been provided yet so visit their website at halfmoon-bay.ca or send an email to [email protected] for auction details.

If you have any ideas for column content or have a community event or story you would like to share, please send ideas and suggestions to [email protected]
