Halfmoon Happenings: Neighbours Helping Neighbours raises $11,870

This Tuesday, a few special things happened that reminded me that there is always a good reason to get out of bed!

My first stop was the Halfmoon Bay school. There I met up with Lynne Bogardus and Elise Rudland from the Halfmoon Bay Community Association (HBCA). Giggles ensued as we were encouraged by Peter Bogardus to stand still and smile while he took our picture holding a cheque for $11,870 from the HBCA’s Neighbours Helping Neighbours fundraiser. Also in the picture are Wendy White (community school coordinator), Glen Smith (principal) and Lindsay Reeve (community school chair). Glen shares this: “We would like to thank the HBCA and the community for their generous donations which help fund family Holiday Hampers, youth boxes, and ‘Wendy’s Drive Thru’ breakfast program. This universal program ensures that all children start their day with full tummies. Served by community volunteers, breakfasts include smoothies, pancakes, wraps, and more. Because our ‘drive thru’ opens onto the playground, this program fosters a sense of community where children, parents, and preschool and StrongStart families can benefit from connections with each other.”

My next stop was a brief visit with a friend to commiserate on the challenges we are both experiencing in our lives these days. After offering each other support, we exchanged a lovely hug and told each other “You are doing a great job of life!”

Feeling uplifted, I headed to my appointment at Fawn Hair Company on Fawn Road. I don’t know how many residents are customers, but what I do know is if you aren’t, you should be! Vanessa is friendly and extremely talented. With soft music playing in her comfortable and clean salon, she transformed my frizzy locks and faded colour into a beautiful head of hair. I felt like I needed to go out somewhere to show it off but here I am writing this column (at least I look good, lol!). Vanessa invites you to “experience luxury products and services in a relaxed and intimate setting, in the heart of our Welcome Woods!” (604-989-4244 / [email protected]

Speaking of fundraisers, in a pre-Christmas article, I invited Coasters to visit the spectacular Laberge light show on Eureka Place and donate to the Food Bank. Paul recently posted “Thanks to your kind efforts, we were able to collect several boxes of food items (including some of the most essential and nutritious), as well as hundreds of dollars, that go a long way to supporting the food bank’s ongoing efforts.”

The HBCA is sponsoring a Fire Smart presentation by David McIlwraith (Fire Smart Coordinator) on Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. at the Halfmoon Bay school. Also present will be the SCRD emergency program coordinator to discuss emergency responsiveness. Check out the informative video on the SCRD’s YouTube Channel: “5 things to know about the Fire Smart program.”

Lastly, I’m going on vacation (yay), so there will be no Happenings column for Jan. 26. With our recent cold temperatures and all that snow, it’ll be a welcome break!
