Halfmoon Happenings

Halfmoon Bay

The June 17 dance at Coopers Green Hall with Papa Greg and the Chillin’ Dylans has been cancelled.

Not in My Backyard: the Halfmoon Bay Citizens Association has arranged for Jennifer Grenz, PhD student in plant sciences and invasive species specialist, to give a free information session about the dangers of knotweed invasions – how to identify it, and what we can do about it. Grenz will be at Sechelt Indian Band Hall June 22 5 to 7 p.m. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. and coffee and tea will be served. This session will be for everyone, with particular interest to property owners, tenants, gardeners, machine operators, land managers, realtors and environmentalists.

The Halfmoon Bay Country Fair with the Super Hero theme will soon be upon us. There will be a free evening kick off on Thursday July 6 at 7 p.m. at Coopers Green Hall. John Clyde and Peter Hews, history buffs who have spent many years researching and collecting artifacts, will have a display of the history of logging railways and logging roads in the Halfmoon Bay area. They have traced some of the old track beds and early logging roads that followed in the 1920s and 1930s. They will tell us of the existence of over eight kilometres of standard gauge railway in Halfmoon Bay prior to 1920 and a 50-ton steam train that was imported from Pennsylvania to pursue the first commercial logging operation in the community. They are hoping that people will share stories and anecdotes they may have heard from relatives and friends associated with these early operations as well as suggestions on how best to display some of these artifacts in the Halfmoon Bay community.

If you would like to promote the Fair, we are looking for families to dress up as super heroes to take part in the July 1 Canada Day parade in Sechelt and give away candy.

For July 9, we need cakes or pies for the cake walk and helpers willing to help control traffic.

This truly is a community fair where our schools, childcare, hospital auxiliary, volunteer fire department, Sunshine Coast Assisted Living and many others put on the fun and are able to raise their much-needed funds. This community has so much to offer – be part of it.
