Broom Busters Mary Beth Knechtel and Roslyn Ladner did a sweep of Redrooffs and Welcome Woods to scout out the Scotch broom and have drawn up a plan of attack for this invasive species. It would really help to have Welcome Woods neighbours come out to help bust the broom. Knechtel and Ladner have set up for Friday and Saturday, May 19 and 20 for busting. They would like to get at least eight or 10 volunteers to tackle Welcome Woods, and someone with a pick-up truck to haul pickings to the green-waste – which will take broom once again. Volunteers should come equipped with loppers, gloves, sun hats and bug repellent. Gathering points are Friday, May 19 at 10 a.m. at Coopers Green Park and Saturday, May 20 at 10 a.m. at the Welcome Woods Market, rain or shine.

Don Cunliffe, Allison Feenstra and Alick Troup represented Halfmoon Bay Community Association Board; also in attendance was Brian Smith along other members of the fundraising committee. Don Cunliffe, head of the committee, presented the status of the fundraising plan and handed out Case for Support brochures.
Halfmoon Bay Branch of the Sunshine Coast Healthcare Auxiliary hosted a bridge luncheon as their main fundraiser for the year, on May 11 at the Botanical Gardens. A fabulous lunch was prepared by members of the Auxiliary, and there were door prizes and a silent auction. As well as donations from the members, the Auxiliary received donations from local merchants. It was an enjoyable event for both the Auxiliary volunteers and bridge players, who are looking forward to running this very successful event again next year.
The next meeting of the Healthcare Auxiliary is the June windup and lunch on Monday, June 12, at Coopers Green. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased from Shelley Grainger at 604-885-7338.
