February will see the Welcome Beach Community Association (WBCA) starting its annual membership drive. For those unfamiliar with WBCA, a non-profit association, they bring us 'concert in the park', an open house for HMB community groups, a golf tournament, barbecues, live band dances and of course the Halfmoon Bay Country Fair.

Halfmoon Bay history: the land and sawmill, established by European settler Frederick Sargeant, circa 1890, is now Sargeant Bay Provincial Park. It was set aside in 1990 to preserve the splendid areas of ocean beaches, rocky headlands, lagoons and heavily forested uplands. The beach at this day-use area is excellent for walking and nature viewing.

This park is a day-use picnicking area only; no camping is permitted. This park also features a safe anchorage and has many hiking trails around Triangle Lake and Colvin Creek, with connecting trails to Trout Lake.

Adjacent to the beach area there is a wetland upstream from Colvin Lake. The lake wasformed by a fish ladder constructed byvolunteers from the Sargeant Bay Society. Last year saw record coho and chum salmon returns to Colvin Creek.

To learn more about conservation efforts from the people who work hard to preserve the values in this park, visit the non-government website for the Sargeant Bay Society at www.sargbay.ca.
