Gumboot Nation: The flowers that come in May

Here's what's happening in Roberts Creek!

Shout out to all those involved in making our Earth Day celebration a great day out, the rain even held off, unlike most of April. With all the showers we’ve had, I am looking forward to a bouquet of May flowers of mammoth proportions!

The Little Legion has a Friday night format dialed in! Their three-pronged approach to become your regular night out is hard to beat. Starting with the down home cooking available at 5 p.m., they offer live entertainment every Friday from 7 to 10 p.m., (except the first one of the month, which is Brain Freeze Trivia Night!) followed by spinning of discs and dancing the night away from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. each week. A good side hustle may be resoling all of the dancing shoes that are getting worn out on the refurbished floor, all I ask is 5 per cent for the idea.

This week, April 29, it’s The Billy Hillpicker Band at 7 p.m., followed by DJ SC Dance Tribe from 10 p.m. till 1 a.m. Next week, May 6, is dinner at 5 p.m., Trivia at 7 p.m. and DJ Aerion to guide you through the night. Lucky people that you are, you get Jason White to be you spin doctor on Friday the 13th!

Art on the Porch: A mini art crawl is coming our way! Two days with two artists, in two local locations. On Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., we have Beth Hawthorn and Kandice Keith pairing up in two outdoor shows at their respective Gumboot Nation properties, 1551 Lockyer Road and 3204 Huckleberry Road. Beth offers up her wheel thrown function art of exceptionally balanced design and Kandice’s work will light up your space with her take on the flora and fauna of Canada (an owl and hummingbird look over me as I write this). Find out more about these two local talents on Instagram, search beth.hawthorn and/or kandicekeithart, as well as their finely crafted web sites – bethhawthorn.com and kandicekeith.ca.

Having been on this planet for a while, I have picked up a few axioms that apply to my life. If you are the smartest person in the room, you are in the wrong room. (BTW, you can learn from everyone and never think you are better just because you are smarter, these things have nothing to do with each other.) Don’t sweat the petty things and don’t pet the sweaty things. Perfection is an illusion, but if you strive for perfection, you can achieve excellence. Sometimes it’s better to be happy than to be right. Never regret the things you’ve done, only the things you haven’t done. (That’s a tough one to hold to.) Getting old is tough, but not everyone gets to do it, and it’s better than the alternative. Don’t give a dozen roses, give a single rose a dozen times. And as a wise man once said, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”
