Gumboot Nation: Road works, sometimes (sometimes not) (April Fools)

Ahhh, the smell of asphalt and the high-viz plumage of the traffic control worker beckons you to enjoy the slower pace of life as construction season begins.

Ahhh, the smell of asphalt and the high-viz plumage of the traffic control worker beckons you to enjoy the slower pace of life as construction season begins. Here in Canada, we are used to six months of winter (on the other side of the mountains anyway) but this year’s crop of road apples promises to be a bumper-to-bumper harvest for seven moons! The good news is that the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) is cutting a temporary road under the power lines from Byng Road to Crowe Road as a detour to ease the summer of blacktop blues. Yay!

What is the best night out for nerds like me? Monthly trivia night at the #219! It’s first Friday again and time to get a team together to test your knowledge, with a side of Maudy’s cooking and a pint of your favourite draft. You will be surprised how much the dusty corners of your brain will hold on to, I know I am! (Being half of last months’ triumphant duo, I can attest to this.) Be there by 6:45 p.m.!

Your friendly reminder, Jam Night moves to Wednesday, Thursday is for Jazz and new this month, Bellyache Monday, where you get to complain about whatever you want and Mike will say things like, “Must be rough” and “Don’t let it get you down buddy.”

Next Friday, April 8, our Little Legion hosts its first vax passport free show, rock n’ roll Vancouver duo, Kitty & The Rooster. With Jodie Ponto on the stand-up cocktail drumkit and Noah Walker on electric guitar, they dish out surf-tastic hooks, clever lyrics, and ridiculously fun shows! Music at 9 p.m., $10 members and $20 guests. Tickets at robertscreeklegion.com.

Saturday April 9 we have local outfits Empty Streets (Simon Hocking, Dan Richter, Cayce Laviolette, Jenny Groves, Baili Clarke) and Bigger Bits of String, self-described as “funky roots-folk-rock you can dance to, with harmony, humour, heartbreak, hope and hipshaking grooves, drawn from an evolving setlist of well-crafted roots tunes.” Bigger Bits are Mark Lebbell, with Kaia Nielsen, Ken Dalgleish and Graham Walker. Members $8 and guests $15.

With the ongoing repairs to the infrastructure at Cliff Gilker Park as a result of the November floods, the SCRD has instituted one-way paths. Be sure to turn left when you enter the park as the paths are one way in a clockwise direction.

Are there plans in the works to expand the territory of the Gumboot Nation, taking Wilson Creek into our district? Sounds like a bang up idea to me!

Look up! The trees are coming to life and the birds are everywhere. A talking raven has been spotted in the Heart of the Creek, answering to the name “Patrick.” He likes to perch on the roof of Melomania and swear at the Cafe patrons in French. Tabarnak!

If you have a look at the publishing date on this column, you will see I took the liberty of peppering a few questionable statements throughout, just to keep your critical thinking skills sharp! ;)
