Ole Cypress in Roberts Creek.

Greetings Creekers!

I know a lot of you were out looking at art over the weekend. Work got in the way of my “crawling” but I did manage to take in some venues. My focus was on artists new to the crawl, or at least new to me. I love walking in the door, not knowing at all what to expect and being surprised. That happened, so I was happy. It was by all accounts a very successful Art Crawl, with people coming from off Coast to take it in and I would like to give a big shout out to Linda Williams who got it all started 15 years ago and is still out there hammering in signs and organizing.

There are all kinds of artistic practices, including painting, ceramics, jewelry, glasswork, etc. But how about topiary? If all this brings to mind for you is hedges trimmed to look like poodles, just take a walk or drive by Ole Place (off Richards Road) and have a look at “Ole Cypress.” I walk by Ole regularly and never fail to stop in amazement at this massive sculpture with the benevolent smile. I have never known who did it until last week. It turns out that artist and horticulturist Susan Box is Ole’s creator and she has been trimming him since 2010. Google thinks he is the “world’s most realistic portrait in topiary” and he’s right here in the Creek. Be sure to go by and take a look. Just don’t all go at once, it might not go over with the neighbours.

Another kind of art is the use of spices and that’s the art that Rashmi Singh uses when she creates her Curry in the Creek. A long time Creeker, Rashmi now lives in Gibsons but she continues to cook her fabulous curries at the Hall and she has been doing it for 15 years. As an immigrant woman she started sharing her cooking as a way to introduce her friends, neighbours and community to her culture. Gradually, this developed into Curry in the Creek. Rashmi cooks and serves up her delicious curries on Thursdays and if you drop by you will see that it’s love and laughter that enhances those spices. She has a regular clientele so it’s best to go to curryinthecreek.com or call 604-828-4086 to check out her weekly menu and order ahead.

Well, Halloween is just around the corner and it seems that if you want to, you can celebrate it several times. You can start with the Halloween Party with Lamprey Lane at the Legion tonight and then tomorrow night you can dress up again and go back to the Legion for Harvester. Meanwhile up at the Hall tomorrow night, it’s Fever! Halloween Hustle. It will be an electrifying night of electro-funk-disco with DJ Sam Pulpo and DJCJ. Dig deep into the dress-ups and get creative because there will be cash prizes! Tickets at buytickets.at/ladyluckevents/1031240 or maybe at the door. (I apologize for not mentioning this event last week). Sunday, it’s Halloween all over again but it’s time to take the kids to the hall for EEK THE CREEK from 1 to 4 p.m. On the 31st, it’s the real thing and everyone will be out trick or treating. If, like me, you don’t get trick or treaters at your house, please consider donating some candy to the people in Mossy Rock, that’s where all the kids are.

Have a great week! Write to me [email protected].
