Gumboot Nation: Do you follow me?

Here's what's happening in Roberts Creek!

I wrote a post on social media that went like this: “What I fail to understand is why doing what I do isn’t enough to keep me fed and housed and bring me the things I need. I have to organize myself into ‘work’ to get ‘paid’. What bulls–!”

The reaction I got was a bit unexpected. Friends from as far as Montreal reached out to see that I was okay, with offers of lasagne and soup. I was touched, but I am doing fine. I am lucky, with a fulfilling career that puts a roof over my head, and a full pantry and fridge. I can’t complain (still do). I was bemoaning that I love to do things that take my time away from the needs of my clients, and was stargazing toward a StarTrek future, where we can simply do what we love without the pressure of “making a living.” I have too many hobbies (writing is one), but my artist brain pulls me in many directions. My heart goes out to those who live hand to mouth and can’t do more than just get by, if that! From past personal experience I know what that is like. The cards are stacked against the needs of the many and we, as individuals, can only do so much. The system needs upheaval. Fifty three people in this country are worth more than $1 billion each. Some perspective: a million seconds is 11 and a half days. A billion seconds is 31 and a half years! Look in on your friends, reach out if you need some help, stock up the food cupboard at the library if you are able, take the time to listen to someone when they need someone to listen. My friends know if my hens have given me eggs, they have eggs. We all need to be understood, and that lack can be the root of all conflicts, from a squabble to full-blown wars. If we don’t understand the point of view of those we share the world with, none of us will get through this with joy. We all deserve joy.

Now it’s time to put yourself in the shoes of someone who is struggling and to build a bigger table. The Coast Wide Food Bank Drive folks are now in their third year of the virtual food drive. All through May the challenge is to raise $150,000, to be split equitably among the four food banks across the Coast. There are challenges among the realtor, business and union sectors and every personal donation will help our friends and neighbours get through this current economic storm (we are not all in the same boat, same storm, different boats). Donate at coastwidefoodbankdrive.ca.

There are a couple of things going on at Little Legion btw, Friday is Brain Freeze Trivia once more! DJ  Aerion follows to close out the night. Saturday is Topher Trick, Paola and Sam Pulpo with the Latin Funk- Cinco de Mayo-ish!
