Group’s new name focuses on environment

Halfmoon Bay

Hi everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful week and enjoyed the milder temperatures and sunny breaks. The birds are starting their morning song and we’ve seen a variety of birds flying by with twigs in their beaks. Nest building has begun!

The Halfmoon Bay Citizens’ Association is happy to announce that they have changed their name to the Halfmoon Bay Environmental Society (HBES). The society’s mission is to promote the maintenance of a quality physical environment for the community of Halfmoon Bay. The society will inform the community on issues which may impact the environment along with determining the views of the residents with respect to the development of lands and advocating on behalf of those residents. The society also supports initiatives to identify sources of pollution of the waters and foreshore of the Bay and to reduce or eliminate pollution. Society president Mary Beth Knechtel said, “We will soon have a new webpage to showcase updates on activities and projects we undertake in Area B.” Stay tuned.

Mary Beth added, “One new development is a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) the Society has with the SCRD by which we will maintain trails in the Homesite Creek Recreation Site on a volunteer basis… We also want to encourage our members and the public to support the Outdoor Recreation Council of BC in their appeal for a much-needed increase in funding for Recreation Sites and Trails BC. Recreation Sites and Trails BC are understaffed and underfunded. Please write to your MLA to show your support for a funding increase.” There is an instant letter writing tool which makes it easy. Simply enter your name and postal code and the link will do the rest. Go to: orcbc.ca/support-rstbc/.

Mary Beth advised that their members are quite concerned with the SCRD’s plan to find a new site for a landfill in Area B. At this point the consultant has only performed a “desk study” regarding possible locations. Further analysis, including fieldwork, is planned for summer. If you have any questions or would like to join the Halfmoon Bay Environmental Society, please send an email to [email protected].

The Halfmoon Bay Community Association (HBCoA) says goodbye to one of their long-time board members, Sylvia Bisbee. Although she is stepping down from the board, she is not stepping away from the community or volunteering at events. Sylvia is one of the association’s star volunteers as she has worked at many events and is the “bartenderess” extraordinaire! Sylvia loves her community and does all she can when volunteering. Her kind and gentle heart is cherished by all and the association is very grateful for her time and enthusiasm. “This is not goodbye Sylvia, but see you soon!”

Be safe, be gentle, and always be kind.
