Do you have what it takes to grow the largest sunflower? The Elphinstone Electors invite you to take part in their inaugural sunflower growing contest for young people.

The contest is open to young people up to 15 years of age from any part of the Sunshine Coast.

Grow the tallest sunflower and win $50. The largest seed head by weight wins $25. The largest seed head by circumference wins $25. More money prizes will be awarded at the proposed Sunshine Coast Botanical Society garden in West Sechelt during the judging festivities. Every effort will be made to see that all the children receive a gift for their efforts.

"We see this contest as a way to get children involved with gardening and to learn a sense of responsibility, while having fun in a less demanding competition," said Vel Anderson with the Elphinstone Electors Community Association.

Quality Farms is providing the specific seeds for the contest. A packet of seeds is attached to the registration forms which are available at Quality Farm and Garden Supply Ltd., Renaissance Rose in Mosaic Market in Davis Bay, John Henry's Marina in Garden Bay, the Egmont Heritage Centre, Garden Gate Florist in Trail Bay Mall and Gibsons Floristin Sunnycrest Mall.

At the end of the contest some of the sunflower seeds will be placed with Clint and Irene Davie for the birds at the Gibsons Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre.

For more information on the contest, contact Vel at 604-886-7488 or Trish at 604-886-7838.
