Hi everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful week and were able to get out and enjoy this amazing spring weather. Looks like the temperatures this weekend will almost be summer-like. Let’s hope we do get some rain soon though as it’s been quite dry so far this spring.
With these sunny days and mild temperatures, it’s very tempting to start the veggie and flower gardens but some gardeners suggest that it’s a little too early. Overnight temperatures may still fall around zero and this warm dry trend may not last very long. Looking back at the weather in April last year, Environment Canada’s historical data noted that the month was very dry, and some nights dipped below freezing so you may want to monitor the weather. It is a good time to plant cool-weather vegetables such as lettuce, kale, chard, spinach, beets, carrots and green onions and wait until May to plant leeks, beans, peas, cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli.
Speaking of gardening, Kym’s Plants located at 7910 Fawn Rd. in Halfmoon Bay is open Wednesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Kym has truckloads of plants coming in every week so stop by and check the new arrivals. Kym is a master gardener and can answer your gardening questions, provide all you need for good garden soil and beautiful plants and when she has a moment or two to spare, is a great listener. There is a wide variety of items to choose from, both perennial and annual plants as well as trees and shrubs. Kym makes awesome hanging basket arrangements so be sure to get your order in early as Mother’s Day is just around the corner. Call 604-740-0056 or email [email protected]. Happy gardening!
This Saturday, April 17 marks one year since my first Halfmoon Happenings column. With absolutely no column writing experience I was hesitant to take on this creative endeavour but was intrigued so here I am one year later with 50 column submissions under my belt. Every week presents a new challenge as to what to submit, making sure to write about what happens in Halfmoon Bay and not be drawn into what is already being reported in the news or on social media. Positive input and personal insights from people in the community have helped a great deal with content. They have graciously shared their stories, Halfmoon Bay history, information about birthday parades, local businesses, bear sightings and gardening tips, to name a few. It warms my heart when friends and neighbours say that they enjoy reading the column and like the positive vibe of the stories. Your comments are very much appreciated, and I look forward to submitting many more columns in the future! Send me a note if you have something to share in Halfmoon Bay, I would love to hear from you.
Be safe, be gentle, and always be kind.
