Galapagos Islands: evolving day by day

Naturalists Society
Galapagos
Marine iguana on Espanola, Galapagos.

Marylee Stephenson will give an illustrated presentation to the Sunshine Coast Naturalists Society, at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 6, about the Galapagos Islands and selected places on the Highlands and rain forest of Ecuador.

Stephenson has visited Galapagos and Ecuador 10 times and will give an overview of changes and evolution taking place in the region. She will also provide some practical tips for those who may be thinking of travelling there.

Stephenson has a MA and a PhD in Sociology (UBC). Her early interest in bird-watching led to an expanded life as an amateur naturalist, writing and art affairs. Her numerous visits to Galapagos have led her to create a guidebook to the Galapagos Islands (Mountaineers Books, Seattle), the third edition coming out in late 2015. She has written a guidebook to the National Parks of Canada, which went through three editions and was published in three languages. She is the owner/curator of Indian Art from the Edge, an online gallery of Aboriginal art from artists largely living in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, and is a regular performer as a comic and storyteller, having just completed a solo show at the Vancouver Fringe Festival.

Currently she also does part-time work with Wild Birds Unlimited. She has a blog recounting her day-to-day jogs in North Vancouver with her terrier Hodge around her ‘hood, with snapshots and videos of urban nature (onthejog.wordpress.com).

The presentation is at the Sechelt Arts Centre, Medusa and Trail, Sechelt. Coffee and cookies will be served. Visitors are welcomed.
