Who in the Gumboot Nation isn’t an outdoor enthusiast? This Saturday, Sept. 25, Roberts Creek resident Bob O’Neill is offering the first in a series of weekly hikes to promote enjoyment and knowledge of the wonderful trails our local forests have to offer. This week will be a trek of moderate difficulty along the lower part of ELF’s Health Trail, off the B&K Road. Two hours through ancient Douglas firs will be a true shinrin-yoku (forest bath). All ages are welcome. Get details at: LivingForestInstitute.ca.

For those of you who use our forest for fun and profit, the mushroom buyer will be back at the hall this week. The first rule of mushroom club is don’t talk about mushroom club (never reveal the location of your patch).

My neighbours at the Little Red Wagon Farm have exciting things to report – they have caught and relocated the pigs! They are all well, together and living in an enclosure that will contain them, yay! And now they have the pigs sorted, they can focus on their pumpkin patch! Stay tuned on their Facebook and Instagram for more about the patch.

The Howesounders are going to take a one-time shot at hosting the Legion Jam on Friday the 24th. You can have any or all the band support you want on stage, or not. 7 p.m. to closing. All COVID protocols in place. No cover, but reserved seating is available. Sign up for stage time at the door. Maudie is cooking dinner (starting at 5 p.m).

What is 6-2 tall and has a victory ticket for Trivia night? This guy! Brain Freeze at the Little Legion is the first Friday of each month (Oct. 1 being the first). Bring a team of five and see how much useless crap is floating around in that head of yours! 7:45 sharp, $5 per person. Maudie is in the kitchen, come early for a meal before the game. Wanna be Quiz Master? [email protected] to apply.

On Saturday, Oct. 2, it’s the return of Vancouver’s Rock ’n’ Roll Cowboy Surfers, The Modelos! Joe Rotundo, Mike Kenney, Brad Ferguson and Geoff Hicks swing into the Creek with songs from their releases Saddle Justice and their latest, Barrel Fever, a seven-inch vinyl EP released in 2019. Their spirited energy and stage antics will have you riding high and shouting for more! Proof of vaccination is required to enter the Roberts Creek Legion under the current provincial health order. Best to book tix and tables in advance rclegionevents.ca.

From time to time I hear from community members, asking for my input on different issues and my writings on hot button subjects have gotten some upset with me, rightly or wrongly. It is my intention to get people thinking, talking, and treating each other with respect. Putting yourself in the shoes of someone else is good for you, and our community. The word “sonder” has become a favourite of mine. Definition: “the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own.”
