Hi everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful week and are staying warm and dry. Environment Canada’s five-day forecast is calling for below zero temperatures and the possibility of flurries. Let’s hope we’ll see little to no snow on the roads and enjoy some clear, brisk nights.

To celebrate Family Literacy Week, the Halfmoon Bay Community School is holding many activities for students, families, and community members. One of the activities is the 1st Annual Amazing HMB Word Race, which will begin on Monday, Jan. 25 and everyone in the community is invited to participate. The starting point will be at the Welcome Woods Market on Fawn Road. A puzzle will be posted outside the store and when you have the answer, go in and advise the cashier who will then give you a map. This map will lead you to a series of clues posted around Halfmoon Bay. These clues will help you solve a word puzzle that supports literacy. Those who participate are encouraged to send in action photos along with their answers to the community school coordinator, Wendy White, at [email protected]. There will be prizes for a primary family, intermediate family and community members, along with funniest and most creative photo prizes.

Hiking and biking the trails along the Sunshine Coast is an endless and amazing adventure you can enjoy every day if you choose. There are many trails in Halfmoon Bay that range from easy (flat) to difficult (rocky, steep) and most are designed for biking as well. Along with taking in the natural beauty of the trails, visitors will also notice how well maintained the trails are. There are many volunteers who cultivate and manage the trails and are hardly ever recognized for what they do. Some volunteers work in groups and organize larger cleanup projects while others walk the trails every day and maintain as they go. Either way, these unsung heroes of our forests are very much appreciated. Their dedication to preserving the surroundings we all share is truly inspiring. If you see some folks on a trail obviously clearing a path or moving a fallen tree, call out a heartfelt thank-you or maybe even lend a hand. Thank-you to all the volunteers who tirelessly work on the trails to make it better for us to visit!

The SCRD contracted design team will be hosting an online community engagement session on Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. to discuss the proposed Coopers Green Hall Replacement Project. The Halfmoon Bay Community Association has been working very hard with the SCRD to move forward with the proposed plan of the new hall. After reaching and surpassing the original goal of raising $300,000 to go towards the building, the association is looking forward to moving ahead with this long-awaited project. Donors have been very generous, and the amount raised is very much appreciated, so everyone is anxious for construction to begin. Zoom meeting details will be provided by the SCRD in the next few days and Halfmoon Bay residents are encouraged to join the meeting. Visit the SCRD website at www.scrd.ca/Coopers-Green for background details and check back for meeting details. Information will also be available on the HBCoA website (hmbcommunity.org) and Facebook page. If you have any questions about the new Coopers Green Hall, please contact HBCoA president Terry Knight at [email protected].
