Eldercollege Lectures

Sunshine Coast ElderCollege is presenting a free non-political lecture series in collaboration with the District of Sechelt that takes an in-depth look at how the district really works.

The community is invited to join ElderCollege and district staff as they host two evenings of behind-the-scenes insights that reflect the crucial role that local government plays in determining the success and well-being of our communities.

On Tuesday, Sept. 4, the focus is on administration, governance and finances with corporate officer Jo-Anne Frank and manager of financial services Ben Currie.

Topics include: municipal legislative framework, municipal governance, municipal elections and referenda and the municipal election schedule for 2018, as well as revenue, property taxes, fees, developer contributions, and debt financing.

The Tuesday, Sept. 11 lecture will spotlight planning, engineering and operations with municipal planner Angela Letman, manager of engineering services Sanath Bandara, public works manager John Devison, and parks manager Perry Schmitt.

The speakers will cover a vast range of topics, outlining the planning department’s functions, legislation and regulations, the Official Community Plan, permits, subdivisions, infrastructure planning, land development and site servicing, accessibility, storm drainage, roads surface, signage, lights, wharfs and docks, the wastewater resource centre, parks, playgrounds, ball fields, trails and beach access.

The lectures will be held at Seaside Centre in Sechelt from 7 to 9 p.m. For more, see www.sunshinecoasteldercollege.ca
