Curlers celebrate 10 years with Coach Dave Sandness

And Orca swim team makes a splash with personal bests in Coquitlam

As seasons close and others open, Special O on the Coast is still strutting its stuff.

Curling wrapped up March 11 and Coach Dave Sandness was presented with a Ten Year Coaching pin for his decade of dynamite skill in guiding his athletes to set the ice aflame!

On March 12, Orca swim team athletes Hailey Borowski, Genny Verge, Lindsay Pearson, Lisa Wortley and Stephanie Rogers attended a swim meet in Coquitlam and all came home proudly bearing brand new personal bests! However, it was uncertain at the beginning that it would end that way. On arrival at the meet, as Lindsay Pearson reached for her bag, she accidently stretched the tendons in her left hand. Despite the injury, she persevered, completed all her races and like the rest of the team, achieved a personal best.

Head Coach Cathy Verge had this to say about the event…

“The swim meet was a wonderful way to end the season. Lisa started the team off getting a new personal best in her first event. Genny finished the day just as it started with a new personal best in her 100 fly. Everyone on our team swam their best.”

March 15 was the last day of swim practice, with tons of fun, athletes racing athletes and coaches alike and just plain enjoying themselves.

FUNdraising (the roof) saw success this year, province wide, with the polar plunge with a total of $330, 000! It meant much more than dollars however as it was a chance for those athletes who felt isolated during the pandemic to once again connect and reunite.

The spring/summer season is set to begin April 10 and it will go till June 29 with the following schedule:

Mondays: Soccer at Gibsons Elementary field from 6 - 7:30 p.m. with Head Coach Richard Hoath

Tuesdays: Softball at Hackett Park from 6:30 - 8 p.m. with Head Coach Randy Younghusband

Wednesdays: Golf on at Blue Ocean from 6 - 7:30 p.m. with Head Coach Chuck Bertrand and assistant coach Darrin Lane

Track & Field at Elphinstone from 6 - 7 p.m. with Head Coach Tania Finnigan

Saturdays: Bocce at Elphinstone from 12 p.m. – 1 p.m. with Head Coach Judy MacDonald

Athletes are eagerly awaiting the new season and its shorts and tees and tourneys and meets!
