Crews work late into night to unblock Redrooffs

Hi everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful week. Wind, rain, sunny breaks, that’s early spring weather for us on the Coast. Don’t forget to set your clocks one hour ahead on Sunday, March 14.

Hi everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful week. Wind, rain, sunny breaks, that’s early spring weather for us on the Coast. Don’t forget to set your clocks one hour ahead on Sunday, March 14.

The forecast called for windy conditions last Friday, but those who live or travel along Redrooffs Road did not expect the mess that this wind would cause. A very large fir tree fell across the road near the 7800 block of Redrooffs, taking down power, cable and phone lines and breaking the pole that the lines were connected to.

Thankfully no one was injured, and no vehicles or buildings were damaged. Power was restored to most of the area within two hours but those living near the downed lines waited longer as the pole had to be replaced and all the lines reconnected.

One of the affected residents, Tammy, noted that, “it was amazing to see all the work that had to go into removing the tree, debris and replacing the pole.” Tammy also said, “The Halfmoon Bay Volunteer Fire Department, Ansan Traffic Control, Fleming Tree Experts, BC Hydro, Eastlink and Telus were all there, working together to get everyone back up and running… The crews arrived shortly after the tree went down, which was around 1 p.m., and did not leave until 11 p.m. after which a cleanup crew worked until 1:30 a.m.” She was very impressed with how everyone worked together and “some not even stopping to have something to eat.”

Residents and motorists were patient and respectful for the most part but there were a few that showed their displeasure with this disruption and delay. Given the circumstances and the enormous amount of work needing to be done, it is no wonder that tempers would be affected.

Perhaps having a little more patience and being respectful to those directing traffic and working in the area might have helped speed up the work. All those that were affected by this are very thankful to the dedicated people who helped with the cleanup, restoration of power, phone, cable and making the road safe to travel on again. You are all very much appreciated!

Terry Knight, president of the Halfmoon Bay Community Association (HBCoA), advised that the association is looking for a volunteer to join the board as their treasurer. Contact Terry at [email protected] if you would like to apply for the treasurer position on the board or if you have any questions. The HBCoA board is a group of caring and committed individuals that work very well together to help bring more to the community.

Of course, the amazing volunteers in the community are pretty awesome as well!

The association is usually very active organizing social events and will be again but for now, the board continues to meet regularly to discuss the future of the association and how events will look post pandemic.

Some of the events that HBCoA organize every year are the Easter Egg Hunt at Coopers Green Park, the Salmon Barbecue and Halfmoon Bay Country Fair in July and Breakfast with Santa at the Halfmoon Bay Elementary School in December, along with concerts and other social gatherings every month or so.
