Hi everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful week and a lovely Easter weekend. The weather cooperated for the most part providing us with some sunny days although the temperature was barely in the double digits and the wind was cool.

A huge thank-you goes out to our Halfmoon Bay Volunteer Fire Department after responding to a house fire in the Welcome Woods area on Easter Sunday morning. Those in the area reported that the fire department and BC Ambulance were at the scene within minutes of the fire being reported. Posts on Facebook advised that “all are ok, and the fire was put out quickly and clean-up done right away.” We are so very lucky to live in a community where we have such dedicated and caring individuals that are here to help should we need them. Your volunteer time and commitment is very much appreciated!

The Halfmoon Bay-Chatelech Community School Association (HBCCSA) is looking for a volunteer treasurer. Community school coordinators at Chatelech (Lia) and Halfmoon Bay (Wendy) are not employed by School District No. 46, they, as well as the SC family resource navigator (Sue), are actually employees of HBCCSA. A volunteer treasurer is needed immediately! This position is critical to the continued success of the program. The duties will require approximately 5-10 hours per month (less during the summer months) and include accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, payroll and GST rebate remittances. The position also requires communication with three staff members in regard to their grant budgets and reporting. Some training will be provided.

Kirsten, the association’s secretary, said that “this essential non-profit organization is made up of volunteers dedicated to making sure that our collective children get the best possible experiences and opportunities to grow and become happy, invested, contributing members to the communities in which they live.” The association’s volunteers strive to provide a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone with an added focus on more vulnerable students. The directors consist of a group of individuals with varied skill-sets, opinions and life experiences which they draw from to manage their staff and programs. They collaborate with their employees and advisors as well as community organizations and individuals to ensure that children and families have access to every possible resource and opportunity available. This is done by providing programs and clubs within the schools and community as well as offering support as needed. The funding for these programs comes from various levels of government grants, as well as fundraising ventures and donations. “A few directors have enjoyed being part of this great organization for many years. It is now time for them to move on and allow new members with fresh ideas and visions to be shared.”

Please contact the association by April 15 at [email protected] to volunteer or request more information about the position. For information about the association please visit www.hmbccsa.org

The Halfmoon Bay Branch of the Sunshine Coast Healthcare Auxiliary is holding a special opening of the Thrift Store on Sunday, April 18 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Special items of clothing, bags and jewelry will be available. This special opening will provide the Halfmoon Bay SC Healthcare Branch’s opportunity to fundraise as they have been very limited in what they can do during the pandemic. They hope to see you there.

Lisa Johnson-Stott, author of the Painted Skies Over Halfmoon Bay, BC, advised that sales went well last weekend and sends a “Big shout-out to Don and Sandi Cunliffe, Judy Roden, Doris Kuusk for stepping in to help with book sales when I couldn’t be there this weekend.” Lisa shared some comments from some happy customers. “Oh, Lisa I’m not even 10 pages in – this book is simply fantastic!” “An amazing collection of beautiful photos and a superb contribution to the HMB community!” Lisa would like to send out another huge thank you to Gil Binne, “who used his creative talents to help make this happen, and he thought he was retired!” Books are selling fast so order yours soon. To order, send an email to [email protected]. Cost is $50 (GST included) and all profits go towards the continuing fundraising efforts for the new Coopers Green Community Hall.
