Community invited to join shoreline clean up

Every year thousands of divers and non-divers alike come together with one common goal - to clean up our world's oceans and waterways.

Every year thousands of divers and non-divers alike come together with one common goal - to clean up our world's oceans and waterways.

More than six million tonnes of debris enter our oceans every year, and this doesn't even account for what's happening in our lakes, streams and rivers.

On Saturday, Sept. 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., volunteers will work under Project AWARE and the Great Canadian Shoreline Clean-up to clean up the Gibsons area coastline and underwater along a 400 metre stretch of beach between the breakwater in front of Gramma's Pub and Armours Beach.

Divers had much success last year, cleaning up more than 1,000 pounds of debris from the bottom of the ocean near the Lighthouse Pub marina and government wharf in Sechelt, while shoreline volunteers removed bags, plastics, bottles, discarded clothing and household and commercial debris.

The Town of Gibsons has volunteered to dispose of the rubbish collected, and as much as possible will be recycled.

Coffee, muffins and clean-up supplies will be provided to volunteers, thanks to the Gibsons Landing Business Asso-ciation. Suncoast Diving is providing free air and half-price rental gear to all volunteer divers. The Waterfront Rest-aurant has offered to feed divers a delicious lunch at 2:30 p.m. following the clean-up. Some prizes will be available, donated from the Light-house Pub in Sechelt and Sirens by the Sea Steakhouse in Davis Bay.

Remember, anything you do, no matter how small, to improve our waterways goes a long way. For further information or to sign up as a diver, contact Sarah Park at 604-989-1175, or email [email protected]. Shoreline volunteers can contact Catherine Evans at 604-886-7300 or email [email protected].
