Celebrate Earth Day

Roberts Creek
earth day

In honour of Earth Day, Roberts Creek will celebrate the 28th annual community Earth Day Festival on April 21 and 22. This year, Coasters have a great chance to make a difference in our lives, our families and our community under the umbrella of Earth Day, the world’s largest civic observance.

Starting off the weekend, an all candidates forum is set to discuss environmental issues, hosted by Sunshine Coast Conservation Association and Alliance 4 Democracy, and moderated by Donna Shugar (past Area D director). The meeting will be held on Friday, April 21, 7 to 9 p.m. at Roberts Creek Hall. All four local candidates will be in attendance to answer questions on climate change, forestry, fisheries, species at risk and watershed management. This is an important chance to engage our future elected representative. All the candidates will have booths at the Festival the following day.

Starting the day Saturday at 10 a.m. is a Meditation Ceremony at the Hall, “a gathering in meditation, sound and prayer to awaken our interconnectedness and wonder of life,” led by Rev. Ray Niebergall.

Then head down the hill to gather with your community for the main event. This year’s theme is Pack It In - Pack It Out - Picnic. Bring your blankets and baskets, and come enjoy the tasty food, live music and over 40 organizations with informative displays. The event kicks off at noon with opening remarks, followed by music, raffle draws and family fun until 5 p.m. Musicians include Ransom Notes, Brothers in Farms, Coast String Fiddlers, Citizen Jane and more.

The SCRD has modified the transit schedule during the day of April 22, as the full-sized bus cannot make it through the intersection of Lower Road, Roberts Creek Road and Beach Avenue with so many cars. See bctransit.com/sunshine-coast for the updated shuttle bus schedule.

All Earth Day events are free; donations are welcome.
