On Aug. 19 last year, the first call went out for special grannies. Thirty of you responded within four days. What a wonderful group! A special granny has raised her children and is now wondering how to encompass all her experiences and expand on them in a meaningful way. Her heart has softened. Her priorities have changed. She looks out on our fast-paced, technically savvy world and wonders who is there for the children. Who has time to listen, to see each one as a one-of-a-kind, delightful individual, to be simply interested?
The Granny Brigade is a group of specially trained volunteers who commit three hours per week to the training and then three hours per week to volunteer in a school or other setting. Grannies do not tutor, give advice, or exact apologies. They are simply there for the child, youth or adult. They listen with total presence like a metaphorical hug.
