Build homes for ducks and other creatures

Scott Hodges installs duck boxes, nesting tubes, and floating logs.

For the past month, Sunshine Coast Wildlife Project team members have been paddling around local lakes installing nest boxes, nesting tubes, and floating logs for ducks. These special new waterfowl homes were constructed by community volunteers with funding from Wildlife Habitat Canada to enhance nesting habitat, investigate best practices for wildlife home design and placement, and encourage monitoring of local wildlife populations.

Ducks are just one group benefiting from Wildlife Project habitat enhancement efforts. Through their Homes for Wildlife Program, together with many local students and community volunteers, they have also built and installed hundreds of homes for swallows, owls, bats, and mason bees.

Community members are invited to participate. Ready-made nest boxes are available, or you can build a wildlife home by obtaining a do-it-yourself building kit, with all materials and easy construction instructions included, for a fun activity with family or friends.
