Blessings for all creatures great and small

Have you ever kissed a turtle, wrestled a farm dog down for a full embrace, or had three spirited dogs leap on your lap all at once? This was just part of the fun at Gibsons United Church’s annual pet blessing on Sunday, Sept. 23.

For the first time, there was an additional blessing of all the critters in the Gibsons Public Market’s Marine Education Centre. The special service was led by Rev. Terri Scallon, and musical accompaniment was provided by flutist Heidi Kurz.

Other than a few cats who expressed displeasure at being outnumbered by the dog population, smiles were plentiful. If it’s true that pets help boost immunity, lower blood pressure and lessen anxiety, then the congregation all went away feeling just a wee bit healthier.

The regular service will resume next week at 10 a.m. in the Coastal Room at the Gibsons Public Market.
