Avid birder Larry Cowan.

Birder Larry Cowan will give an illustrated presentation about a birding adventure in Peru, to the Sunshine Coast Natural History Society in Sechelt, on Friday, Oct. 7, 7:30 p.m.

Through the use of photographs, videos and sound recordings, you will get a sense of an exotic birding trip to South America. You will experience the desert and seashore birding areas north and south of Lima followed by an 11-day journey from the northern city of Cajamarca over the Andes to the city of Tarapoto. From here we explore the Peruvian Amazon from the city of Iquitos down the Amazon River and up the Napo River.

There will be Humboldt penguins south of Lima while Northern Peru provides many colourful endemic species including the amazing hummingbird, the marvelous spatuletail. Canopy walkways above the thick canopy of the Amazon forests allow eye level views of many colourful and interesting canopy birds. The topography covered is varied from coastal deserts, the Andes, to the Amazon jungles and the ever-changing Amazon and Napo River shorelines.

Cowan spent 45 years in the printing industry before retiring in 2009. An avid birder since the early ’90s, he has led monthly birding field trips for Nature Vancouver for over 20 years. He is the current vice-president of the British Columbia Field Ornithologists. Birding has also taken him to Ecuador, Colombia, and many places around North America.

The presentation takes place at Sunshine Coast Arts Centre (at Trail and Medusa). Refreshments will be served, and new members are welcome.
