Better at Home pays it forward

Community-minded donors gave a motorized scooter in excellent condition to the Better at Home program in late 2014. They simply requested the scooter go to someone who was in need of transportation.

The program soon had the opportunity to pay it forward, making sure it went to someone in need. Better at Home program coordinator Darlene Hood saw a wanted ad, called the number and the connection was made.

Dave Marshall, a 75-year-old resident of Halfmoon Bay, was delighted when he saw what great condition the scooter was in. Marshall had recently been released from the hospital and had been told by his doctor that his driver’s licence would be suspended for the next six months while he was in recovery.  This left him and his wife Benita feeling isolated and helpless.

After having a brief conversation with Marshall, Hood discovered that he has been an active volunteer on the Sunshine Coast. Marshall was a 20-year member of the Kinsman Club, the treasurer for the BC Polio Foundation for 15 years, a volunteer for the GF Strong Foundation for 20 years and one of the founders of the high school drag racing team. When Hood heard about the positive impact Marshall has had on others for so many years, she knew this was a perfect opportunity to pay it forward.
