Belugas through the camera lens

Sunshine Coast Natural History Society
Janey Talbot
Janey Talbot.

Janey Talbot will be giving an illustrated presentation in Sechelt entitled “Belugas Seen Through the Camera Lens in Churchill, Manitoba.”

Talbot had the opportunity in June last year to visit the Churchill Northern Studies Centre to learn something about belugas that are found in the adjacent estuary of the Churchill River. Accommodation was in dormitories of the Northern Study Centre. During the days, Talbot and other guests visited the belugas on the Churchill River estuary, using Zodiacs or kayaks. In the evenings, they heard lectures about belugas and polar bears, the impact of climate change, the Dene people, and photography.

Talbot’s presentation will be illustrated with slides of the Northern Studies Research Centre, which started out as a Canadian/U.S. rocket launching site, tidal pools, floe ice and, of course, many photos of belugas in the Churchill River.

Talbot spent her career in education. On retirement on the Sunshine Coast, she now explores myriad activities. She’s a member of swimming and dragon boating teams and is active in yoga and Pilates classes. She also spends much time paddle boarding and kayaking in Sargeants Bay. Her favourite mode of travelling is to cycle tour with her husband John.  Over the past few years they have cycled extensively in Europe, Vietnam, California and Quebec.

Talbot will speak at the Sunshine Coast Natural History Society meeting at 7:30 p.m., Friday, March 3, in the Sechelt Arts Centre, Medusa and Trail. Coffee and cookies will be served. Visitors are welcomed.
