August festival cancelled

Citing tough economic conditions, the organizers of the Sunshine Coast Wooden Boat Festival have pulled the plug on the August event.

Citing tough economic conditions, the organizers of the Sunshine Coast Wooden Boat Festival have pulled the plug on the August event.

"It is with regret that the organizing committee of the 2010 Sunshine Coast Wooden Boat Festival announces that this year's festival has been cancelled due to the current economic climate," said Michael Ross, media liaison in a news release sent out on Monday morning. "Thanks must be given to sponsors, wooden boat entries, donating artists, display/demonstrators, the incredible volunteers and the visiting public. Each of you made the past festivals a memorable success."

Ross said the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary Units, 12 Halfmoon Bay and 61 Pender Harbour, support the decision to cancel; yet hope that it can be revived in the future should sufficient interest be displayed by all participating parties.

"Both Auxiliary Coast Guard Units thank all who made generous contributions to their units in support of their mission, saving lives at sea," added Ross. "They hope you [Coast residents] will continue to support their training to maintain their readiness on behalf of the marine community."
