Last week’s editorial in the Coast Reporter, “An opportunity for engagement,” invited residents to share their thoughts on the shíshálh Nation and B.C. government Land Use Planning process by Jan. 31. For some time, Area A has wanted a voice and to be involved in how decisions are made and matters of Crown land use. By filling out the “Participant Questionnaire” you have the chance to share your thoughts, mostly through multiple-choice questions, anonymously. This is an opportunity we have not had on many issues affecting our community in the past. Please take advantage of this one before Jan. 31. Go to landuseplanning.gov.bc.ca to access the questionnaire.
The Literacy Crawl “Words in the Woods” continues until Jan. 29. The colourful letters are posted throughout the community. When all words are collected, they form a phrase. Complete the entry form at www.pendercommunity.ca or call 604-883-2826 to compete for a wonderful prize.

Many years ago, I nervously set out for an interview with an important woman in our community for a volunteer position she had held for seven years. My simple responses to her questions were OK and no one else had applied. I came away equipped with history, resource material and inspiration; perfectly mentored. My first Harbour Highlights column took four days. I could not type and was/am a tech no ! phob. Weeks and columns later I received an email from her. “The column has gone to a good home.” In my mind I saw her smile. Wow! Whew. This first volunteer job in Pender Harbour changed my life. I was home. Thank you, my great friend and mentor Rose Everett. We miss you.
