So far the group behind a $23-million affordable women’s housing project slated for Sechelt has raised $440,000 toward its $3-million goal.

That includes an initial $50,000 from the Sunshine Coast Credit Union, paid “on behalf of its members,” according to a release from the financial institution. It’s also making up to $25,000 available – people can activate $50 donations by taking an online Financial Wellness Assessment.

The fundraising total also includes a pledge from an anonymous donor to match all donations up to $200,000, Sunshine Coast Community Services Society’s (SCCS) capital campaign manager Sandra Cunningham told Coast Reporter in an email.

The society needs to raise $3 million for the capital side of the project, which will see 34 rental units for women constructed in a six-storey building on 5638 Inlet Ave. The building will also house SCCS office and programming space.

BC Housing is paying for the four storeys of rental units only and the remainder, about $4 million, will be funded through grants. The society expects to get results from federal infrastructure grant applications in July.

When the fundraising campaign, called Building Together, was launched in April, about $412,000 of the $3-million goal had been donated by community members, including the anonymous donor pledge.

“We are confident the funds will come in as people become aware of the project,” said Cunningham.

The society will be revealing a 3D model of the final design “in the days to come.”
