DEADLINE EXTENDED: The Savary Island community plan update is in phase three. The online survey deadline has been extended until August 29.

The Savary Island Official Community Plan (OCP) is currently in phase three. Now, the online survey has been extended until August 29

According to the Savary Island Community Plan Advisory Committee, an OCP provides a policy framework to guide land use and development decision-making of qathet Regional District, other government agencies and landowners.

According to the community plan website, the purpose of the survey is for folks to share thoughts on key directions and long-term vision for the community and to establish community goals and policies for achieving that vision.

Based on feedback received during phases one and two of the project, the advisory committee has updated the community vision and goals from the 2006 Savary Island Official Community Plan to the following:

Vision: "Our community is committed to maintaining Savary Island's unique character and rustic lifestyle while protecting the island's groundwater resources and sensitive ecosystems, and recognizing the Tla'amin people's rich history, sensitive cultural resources and ongoing interests on the island."

Goals and concerns: Tla'amin Nation and Savary Island; growth over time; groundwater; land conservation; coastal flood adaptation; slope hazard areas; infrastructure and services.

"Thank you to everyone who attended our in-person events on July 28 and 29, and our online information session on August 5," stated the advisory committee on its website. "It was great to meet with so many community members and to hear your thoughts and concerns. A report summarizing what we heard at these events will be compiled in the coming weeks."
