Snow turns to slush on the Sunshine Coast Friday, some closures continue

Snows turned to rain overnight for much of the lower Sunshine Coast, turning many roads to slush.

Snows turned to rain overnight for much of the lower Sunshine Coast, creating slushy conditions on roadways.

For School District 46, this meant a late start, with school starting at 10:30 a.m. district wide to allow time for roads to be plowed. Morning school buses were also cancelled. "We care about the safety of students, staff, and families and always want to make the best decision given the conditions," said the school district notice.

For the Sunshine Coast Regional District, grey zone curbside collection was limited to Lower Road and the highway. "If it is safe to do so, residents can bring their bins to either of those locations. We’ll pick up double next week," said SCRD communications manager Aidan Buckley.

The Sechelt Landfill and Pender Harbour Transfer Station are closed for the day.

In stark contrast to last weekend's frigidity, Environment Canada is predicting rain and temperatures in the 4C to 7C range over Saturday and Sunday and into next week.
