Patrick Weiler: addressing the climate crisis, seniors’ support and housing affordability

The Liberal candidate presents an action plan for critical issues

That’s what I’m hearing about in our community, so I’m running for re-election as your Liberal candidate for West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country to tackle these issues.

I’m an environmental lawyer, raised in Sechelt and West Vancouver. I joined the Liberals because they’re the only party really addressing our concerns: the climate crisis, support for seniors, affordability and reconciliation.

Here’s our plan:

The climate crisis

We’re the only party with a credible plan to fight the climate crisis. We’re on track to exceed our original Paris targets—so we increased them. It’s been endorsed by Canada’s contributing authors on the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, including former BC Green Party leader Andrew Weaver.

The Conservatives, meanwhile, have promised to revive the Northern Gateway Pipeline, which would tear right through the pristine rainforest that is our backyard. And they’ve promised to violate the Paris Accord by rolling back our emissions reductions targets.

Support for seniors

Our plan to support seniors will boost Old Age Security by 10% next year for seniors 75 and over, increase the Guaranteed Income Supplement by up to $750, improve the quality and availability of long-term care home beds, and more.

Affordability

I hear from too many people with good paying jobs that cannot find a place to live on the Sunshine Coast. Our plan will make housing affordable by building, repairing or restoring 1.4 million new homes across Canada, introducing a tax-free savings account for first-time homebuyers, banning blind-bidding, taxing property-flipping and more. Generation Squeeze, a Vancouver-based advocacy organization on affordability issues, has endorsed our plan.

Reconciliation

As a lawyer who has practiced aboriginal law and represented First Nations across our province, I’m fully committed to reconciliation. We’ve done a lot in the past six years:

  • helped lift every long-term drinking water advisory on reserve in B.C.;
  • completed or made progress on 80% of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s calls to action under federal jurisdiction;
  • incorporated the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples into federal law.

There’s more to do, and I will continue to build relationships to advance meaningful reconciliation in our communities.

The choice in this election is clear. We can move backwards on the climate, childcare, affordability and reconciliation with the Conservatives, or we can move forward—for everyone.

I hope I can earn your vote.
