Ontario remains the only province to permit privately operated online gambling platforms under a regulated framework. Sites such as Zamsino.com operate in the province, while other jurisdictions maintain government-run models or have not opened the market to private operators. The differences in approach have prompted discussion about fairness, consumer protection and potential economic impacts, with some observers calling for more consistent rules across the country.

In April of 2022, Ontario launched a regulated iGaming market. This allowed private operators to legally enter the gaming space. The market is overseen by iGaming Ontario, which became a standalone agency in 2025. Previously, it was a subsidiary of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO), but it has now been given the responsibility of managing iGaming when it is provided by private operators.

The model has generatedbeen hailed as a success, generating over CA$3.2 billion in revenue in the financial year 2024/2025. This was a 32% increase from the year before.Ontario, Canada’s most populous province, currently has 49 licensed iGaming operators and 83 gaming websites as of July 2025. These regulatory conditions have allowed operators to establish a presence in the province.

According to a market performance report by iGaming Ontario for the 2024/25 fiscal year, casino games led in the generation of revenue in the iGaming field. Live dealer games, slots, table games and P2P bingo contributed to 75% of revenue generated in Q2 of the period. Examples include slot games like Book of Dead

In Q2, there were approximately 1.32 million active player accounts in Ontario. Total wagers across casino games, peer‑to‑peer poker, and online sports betting amounted to over CA$18.6 billion. Casino games accounted for about 86% of the total wagers, while betting represented 12%.

Technology advancements and market growth

Advancements in mobile technology have expanded access to online gaming platforms, enabling use from various locations with a smartphone and internet connection. The sector has also incorporated technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR), which have influenced platform functionality and user interaction.
